# Working with AI

> Let Claude, ChatGPT or another AI app build and change your courses. The three ways to connect it, side by side, and how to pick one.

An AI app such as Claude or ChatGPT can work on your course for you. You write what you want in plain words, for example "Add a quiz with five questions at the end", and the AI builds it. You see every change in the editor and can take it back with **Undo**. This works three ways:

- **Live**: the AI works in the course you have open right now. Recommended.
- **File with MCP**: the AI builds a course and gives it to you as a file. Good for a brand new course.
- **Course script**: works with any AI chat, without any setup. Slower, and mistakes are more likely.

You find all three in the editor under <ui-path path="View > Connect AI">

</ui-path>

. The Studio's start page also has a page **With AI** with the same setup guide.

<hint-box kind="ai" title="What is MCP?">

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a plug that lets an AI app use the tools of another program. Once you add Open Learning Studio to your AI app as an MCP connector, the AI can read, build, check and export courses with the same functions as the editor.

MCP connectors work for example in Claude (claude.ai and the desktop app), Claude Code, ChatGPT (paid plans, developer mode), Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI and Codex CLI. How to add the Studio to your app: [Connect your AI app](https://docs.ols.yonn.online/en/ai/connect-your-app).

## Live in 4 steps

<procedure>

### Add the Studio to your AI app once

Your AI app needs the Studio's MCP address. You do this only once. The steps for Claude, ChatGPT and other apps are on [Connect your AI app](https://docs.ols.yonn.online/en/ai/connect-your-app).

### Start the connection

Open your course, go to <ui-path path="View > Connect AI">

</ui-path>

 and click **Start connection**. The Studio shows a code and a ready-made sentence with a **Copy** button.

### Paste the sentence into your AI chat

Start a chat in your AI app with Open Learning Studio switched on and paste the sentence. As soon as the AI connects, the status in the dialog changes from **Waiting for AI** to **Connected**.

### Say what you need

Write your request in plain words. Every change appears in the editor right away and is one step in **Undo** (<key-combo keys="Ctrl+Z">

</key-combo>

).

</procedure>

<tip>

Not sure what to ask? The dialog lists ready-made requests under **Then ask the AI for help**. Click one to copy it. More ideas: [Prompts that work](https://docs.ols.yonn.online/en/ai/prompts).

</tip>

## File with MCP in 3 steps

Use this way when your AI app knows the Studio's address but you don't want a live connection, for example to build a new course from scratch.

<procedure>

### Get the course as a file (or skip this)

For an existing course: in the dialog pick **File with MCP** under **Which way fits you?** and click **Download course script**. On **My courses** the course menu has the same action: **Export as course script (for AI)**. For a new course you need no file.

### Ask in your AI app

Start a chat with Open Learning Studio switched on. Attach the file and write what you want. For a new course, describe it instead. You need no extra instructions: the AI learns the format from the Studio's tools.

### Open the result

The AI gives you a course script (`.olscript.json`) or a Studio file (`.olsx`) to download. On **My courses** click **Open file** and pick it. It opens as a new course; your original stays unchanged.

</procedure>

## Course script in 4 steps

This way works with any AI chat that can read an uploaded file, also without MCP.

<procedure>

### Download the course script

In the dialog pick **Course script** under **Which way fits you?** and click **Download course script**.

### Copy the instructions

Further down you find **Instructions for the AI** with a copy button. Copy them. They tell the AI where the format reference is and which rules to keep.

### Ask in any AI chat

Start a new chat, upload the course script, paste the instructions and add your request at the end, for example "Add a quiz with five questions".

### Open the answer

Save the AI's answer as a file ending in `.olscript.json`. On **My courses** click **Open file** and pick it. If the Studio reports an error, paste the message into the chat and ask the AI to fix the file.

</procedure>

More about the format: [The course script](https://docs.ols.yonn.online/en/ai/course-script).

## Let an AI app read this guide

This user guide is also an MCP server. Add the address below to your AI app the same way as the Studio (no sign-in). Then the AI can look things up here before it answers, with three tools: **list-pages** (all pages), **get-page** (one page) and **search-pages** (search).

```text
https://docs.ols.yonn.online/mcp
```

<copy-prompt label="Ask with the guide">

Look up in the Open Learning Studio guide how layers work and explain it to me in three sentences.

</copy-prompt>

## If something doesn't work

**Live and File with MCP are greyed out ("Not offered on this Studio").**
This Studio was installed as a plain website without its server part, so it has no MCP address. Use the course script, which works with any chat, or ask whoever runs your Studio.

**The AI doesn't react to the sentence.**
Open Learning Studio is not switched on in this chat. Switch it on (in Claude under **+** and **Connectors**, in ChatGPT with **@**) and paste the sentence again.
